Eden Protocol - named in the 8 December 2024 record

Legacy recorded date: Concepts

The claim - verbatim

Michael Darius Eastwood named the Eden Protocol (his specific named framing of a governance approach for embedding ethical principles at the foundations of an AI system, 'at the genesis of AI' and 'shaping every recursive loop, every decision, and every capability of AI' (book draft v3.2, lines 2472 and 2481), rather than imposing them as external constraints) in the 8 December 2024 priority manuscript, in the message body and in the attached book draft v3.2 ('Chapter 20: The Eden Protocol: Intelligence Born in the Garden', 31 occurrences); expanded it in the 562-page book manuscript self-sent on 30 April 2025; and published it in book-length form in Infinite Architects (ISBN 978-1806056200) on 2 January 2026. Hardware implementation remains conceptual at TRL 0 to 1 with no prototype; the full specification is published as Eden Engineering.

Limits and citation guidance - what this claim does not support, and how to cite it

Limits. Constitutional AI (Bai and others, arXiv:2212.08073, 15 December 2022) states a training method in which a model critiques and revises its own responses against a written 'list of rules or principles', which its abstract calls training 'through self-improvement', with control as its stated purpose; its abstract does not state a protocol placed at a system's foundations and holding in every recursive loop as the system evolves. Ethics built into an agent's architecture is an older category, stated in the Friendly AI writings (Hibbard 2001; Yudkowsky, 15 June 2001; Bostrom 2003) and developed in the machine-ethics literature (Arkin, ACM/IEEE HRI, 12 March 2008; Wallach and Allen, Moral Machines, Oxford University Press, 2009), and no originality over that category is claimed. Hardware implementation remains conceptual at TRL 0 to 1 with no prototype; the full specification is published as Eden Engineering.
